Catherine Mary Josephine Leigh, better known as 'Flash Kate', was born in Dubbo. Years later, along with her arch rival Tilly Devine, she rose to notoriety as one of the toughest gangsters in Sydney.
Their battle to be the ‘Queen’ of the Sydney underworld fuelled the razor gang wars of Darlinghurst, from 1927-30. Later the Court's sent Kate back to Dubbo for two years & replied, “I’d rather be dead than in alive in Dubbo!”
Upon her return, Kate opened ‘Flash Kate’s Casino & Brothel’ (now the site of the Milestone Hotel) proving that you can't keep a good girl down.
